How to succeed in the gym is pretty simple. We've all heard it. Exercise and eat right. That's all there is to it, right! Then why is it so hard to actually do it? Let's break down and find out.
These 4 Simple Things...
A gym, weights, supplements, etc. (Yes, even you runners need some things - clothes, shoes, probably headphones, somewhere to run - in all weather conditions)
You need to know what to actually do and how to do it. The "what", of course, depends on you, where you're at now, and where you want to be. i.e. Goals. Goals are the easy part. Scroll through Instagram for a few minutes, and it's pretty easy to decide what you want to look like, the confidence you wish you had, and the way you wish you felt at the top of a flight of stairs. But what style of workout is right for you and also fits your goals? The "How" is another hurdle. How do you actually perform those movements in a way that won't result in physical therapy sessions 3 times a week?
This one is a huge. What you eat matters! I can't stress it enough. This one is especially important during the holidays. On average we gain 5 to 8 pounds over the holidays! Crazy, right? There are tons of diets out there, and people telling you they're all right for you, but the reality is, people are different, and they have different needs/health considerations, and some diets work better for some people than they do for others. You need a diet that works for your body, but also aligns with your goals. With all the noise out there, where do you start?
4. Motivation + Commitment
The hardest one of all. This one is the white whale of fitness. This is the one that everyone struggles with. No matter who you are, or how long you've been working out, there has, or will, come a time when you're going to struggle to make it into the gym. And once you make it in, you still have to find the motivation to push yourself to actually make it a good workout. This one is also the catch-all for basically any excuse you might have for not getting in shape (Time, money, physical/mental/emotional roadblocks, etc.). With enough commitment and motivation, you can and will overcome anything.
So that's it...Really! Those 4 things are all it takes to be successful in the gym and to get into shape. Once you have them and start to put them into practice, you'll start to see results. You'll see the pounds fall off. You'll feel you confidence boost. You'll have more energy. You'll get a sense of accomplishment. You'll know what you're doing in the gym, which means you won't feel lost/confused/embarrassed trying to figure out what to do next. Before you know it, those positive feelings will develop into positive associations in your brain when you exercise. That's when you will really see your progress take off, because you'll start to enjoy working out. Once you're hooked, there will be no stopping you.
